Sometimes you may need to change schema definitions in existing columns.

The following shows an example of how you can do this:

 -- drop the XML schema from existing column definitions
 ALTER TABLE AD
    ALTER COLUMN Title xml

 -- DROP IF EXISTS
 IF    EXISTS (SELECT name
               FROM  sys.xml_schema_collections
               WHERE name='TitleSchema')
    DROP  XML SCHEMA COLLECTION TitleSchema
 GO

 -- new definition
 -- there can only be one Title element
 CREATE XML SCHEMA COLLECTION TitleSchema AS
 '<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
 <xsd:schema xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">
   <xsd:element name="Title">
     <xsd:complexType>
          <xsd:attribute name="Type" type="xsd:string" />
          <xsd:attribute name="Value" type="xsd:string" use="optional" />
     </xsd:complexType>
   </xsd:element>
 </xsd:schema>'
 GO

 -- IMPORTANT: before you add back the schema to the column
 -- definition, make sure all values in your existing column
 -- comply with the new schema definition
 ALTER TABLE AD
    ALTER COLUMN Title xml(TitleSchema)
